Service Specification

Antiviral Storage

This service is aimed at the prompt supply of specialist medicines, the demand for which may be urgent and/or unpredictable according to circulating levels or detection of localised outbreaks of influenza. The Service Specification details the provision of antiviral medicines from initial outbreak in the out of season period but also describes how this fits with wider pandemic flu arrangements as defined by the Department of Health and Social Care.

What’s the purpose of this service?

To improve access and provide advice to people on specific antiviral medicines when they are required promptly; ensuring supply of antiviral medicines can meet the needs of the population in response to early circulating levels of flu.

To support people, carers and clinicians by providing them with up to date information and pharmaceutical advice, and referral where appropriate.

Who is eligible for this service?

The service will be available to all patients who are:
 registered with a GP practice within NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s CCGs; or
 resident within Herefordshire & Worcestershire but not registered with any GP practice across the UK (this includes individuals of no fixed abode)

What are the reporting requirements?

There will be no formal reporting requirements for this service, but a record will need to be made in the pharmacy of the numbers of antivirals supplied to support any financial claims. In the event of an incident in conjunction with the service there will be an expectation that the pharmacy will work with NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire CCG in understanding and learning from any such incident upon request.
